Car electrical problems: causes and repair
By Altay Hasanli, auto electrician
Short answer
When individual electrical functions fail (lights, windows, central locking, the dashboard), the cause is usually a fuse, a relay, a corroded connector or a damaged wire. If a fuse keeps blowing, there's a short circuit: fitting a higher-rated fuse is dangerous.
The most common causes
- 1
Fuses and relays
A blown fuse or a faulty relay cuts power to the whole circuit. If a new fuse blows again, the cause is a short circuit.
- 2
Short circuits and chafed wiring
In door hinges, the boot lid and the engine bay, wires chafe and break over time. That's the main cause of intermittent faults.
- 3
Corroded connectors and ground points
Moisture and salt corrode connectors and weaken ground points: lights dim, sensors misread and several faults appear at once.
- 4
Body control module (BCM, comfort module)
In modern cars, an electronic module controls the lights, windows and locks. If it fails or water gets in, several functions can stop at once.
What you can check yourself
- Find the relevant fuse in the owner's manual and check it.
- Note whether the fault appears after rain, a car wash or a particular action (opening a door, a rough road).
- If any extra equipment was fitted recently (alarm, audio, lighting), tell us.
When to stop driving
- Never replace a fuse with a higher-rated one or a piece of wire: the wiring can melt and catch fire.
- If you smell burning plastic, see smoke or feel hot wires, switch the car off and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
How we find the cause
- 1We trace the circuit on the wiring diagram and measure voltage drops.
- 2We find the short by testing the circuit section by section, without needless disassembly.
- 3We clean connectors and solder and insulate wires — no twisted joints.
- 4If a module has failed, we repair or code it.
This guide is general information: one symptom can have several causes, and only a diagnostic shows the exact one.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a fuse keep blowing?
A fuse blows to protect the circuit: there's a short or an overload. Replacing it without finding the cause is only a temporary fix.
How much does wiring repair cost?
Wiring and electrical repair starts at 10 AZN. The final price depends on where the fault is and is agreed before any work starts.
Can a water-damaged module be saved?
Often yes, if it's cleaned and repaired in time. The sooner you come in, the less the corrosion spreads.
Other problems
- Car won't start
Starter won't crank, clicks, or the engine won't catch
- Battery keeps dying
The battery goes flat overnight or after a few days parked
- Check Engine light is on
The engine warning light is on or flashing
- Alternator not charging
Battery light on while driving, lights dimming
- Engine shaking or losing power
Shaking at idle, hesitation and loss of power when accelerating
- Fuel consumption is up
The tank empties faster than usual with the same driving
- Engine stalls by itself
The engine cuts out while driving, at a stop or right after starting
